Your Pattern: The Chameleon
You lose yourself by becoming exquisitely attuned to everyone else.
You notice people.
Their moods. Their tone. The slight shift in someone's energy. What they might need. Whether they're disappointed. Whether everything is okay.
You're likely thoughtful, empathetic, accommodating, and “easy to be around.”
Those are real strengths.
But your sensitivity to other people can become so automatic that you check in with everyone else before you check in with yourself.

Your hidden pattern:
When life feels uncertain or stressful, your attention moves outward.
Is everyone okay?
Is anyone upset?
What do they need from me?
What should I say?
What would make this easier?
You may find yourself saying ‘yes’ when you want to say ‘no,’ changing your preference to accommodate someone else's, or doing things you don't really want to do because disappointing someone feels almost unbearable.
Underneath it may be a belief that sounds something like:
“I have to be easy to love.”
So you adapt.
And you're very, very good at it.
-
How you lose yourself:
The Chameleon doesn't necessarily lose herself all at once.
It happens in tiny moments.
You choose the restaurant everyone else wants.
You say, “I don't care,” when you actually do.
You soften what you really think.
You scan someone's face before deciding how you feel about what you just said.
You take care of someone else's discomfort before you've even acknowledged your own.
Eventually, you can become so fluent in everyone else's wants, needs, and emotions that one surprisingly difficult question remains:
What do I want?
-
What you're really longing for:
Underneath all that attunement may be a longing for peace and presence — the freedom to simply be in your own experience without constantly monitoring everyone else's.
To have a preference without defending it.
To say ‘no’ without rehearsing the fallout.
To let someone be disappointed and still know that you're okay.
Your path home isn't becoming less caring.
It's learning that connection doesn't require you to leave yourself behind.
Insight means nothing without doing something different.
Now you know a little more about The Chameleon pattern.
But knowing your pattern isn’t enough. The next step is to practice the skill of coming back to yourself.
I've chosen a short practice for you from The Somatic Pharmacy based on your result.

Your Prescription: Return Your Energy Home
A 5 minute practice from the Somatic Pharmacy
You’re incredibly practiced at noticing what’s happening around you — how someone is feeling, what they might need, whether everything is okay.
But when so much of your attention lives outside of you, it can become harder to hear yourself.
I chose Return Your Energy as an invitation to gently gather your attention back from all the people, roles, and expectations pulling on it — and bring it home to you.
You don’t need to stop caring about anyone else.
For these five minutes, you simply get to include yourself.
When to use this
Come back to this practice when you notice that so much of your attention is on everyone else that you’ve lost track of yourself.
Especially:
After a difficult or emotionally charged conversation
When you’re preoccupied with how someone else is feeling
After spending time caring for or supporting other people
When you catch yourself wondering what everyone else wants before asking what you want
Afterward, notice
Before moving on with your day, ask yourself:
What can I hear from myself now that my attention is back with me?
It might be a feeling, a need, a preference — or simply a little more awareness that you’re here.
NOW YOU KNOW HOW YOU TEND TO LOSE YOURSELF.
Next: begin the journey home by discovering what matters to you
When you’ve spent so much of your life responding to what needs to be done, what other people need, or what’s expected of you, it can be surprisingly difficult to hear the answer to the question:
What actually matters to me?
Come Home is a short guided exercise designed to help you quiet some of the noise, reconnect with yourself, and listen for what you want your life to feel like in this season.
You don’t need to make any big decisions or figure out your whole life.
Just bring something to write with and give yourself about 15 minutes.
One question. Ten minutes of writing. A little more clarity about what matters to you.
